Troubleshooting Before You Call

Before reaching out to a tradesperson, consider the following:
No Water?
Check meter, has it been turned off? Check with your neighbour/other residents. Perhaps there are temporary works within the complex. Call your water company to ensure it hasn't been turned off in the street.

No Hot Water?
Check the isolating switch (typically located at the switchboard and next to the hot water system, if installed) are both turned on.
Check the safety switch marked "hot water" or "HWS" at the switchboard.
Check the unit itself: If the unit is gas, check the pilot light has not gone out. If it has, can you re-light?
If the unit is instantaneous electric, check for an error code.
If the unit is outside, is there water coming out of it? If there is you will need a plumber. If it is electric and no water is coming out, you probably need an electrician.

Water Leaks?
If you have a dripping tap, it is most likely a washer and it will need to be replaced. If you do not know how to do this, don't try. If you do, the first step is to turn off the water at the mains supply before you proceed.

Blocked Drains or Sinks?
Usually caused by blockages and commonly food build up in kitchens or hair build up in bathrooms, blockages can be easily rectified with a plunger, Draino (available from supermarkets), or removing the hair and food that is causing the blockage.
Gas Smell or Leak?
If you can smell gas, immediately turn the gas off at the meter and call a plumber to attend. Call emergency services if applicable.

No Gas?
Check your gas meter to ensure the gas is not turned off.
Check with your gas provider to make sure there is no issue from their end. If you are in a unit or apartment complex, check with body corporate to make sure there are no issues.

No Power?
If you have no power or some power is working and some is not, check your switchboard as chances are you have tripped your safety switch. If there is no electricity at all, check with your provider about supply outages in your area.

Heater Not Working?
Electric Heater: Check the power supply. Are other appliances connected to power points in the surrounding area working? Test other appliances in the same power point to see if they work. Check to see if any safety switches have ben tripped. Check controls and refer to the appliance manual. 
Gas Heater: Check the gas supply is still connected by testing other gas appliances such as cooktops. Check the mains supply at gas meter or contact the gas supplier to see if supply is interrupted in the area. You can Google "Gas supply issues" for your area. Check that the pilot light is still lil. Instructions for lighting it will be on the appliance, if not, you can Google the model number for details.
Split System?
If the unit is not working, change the batteries in the remote control. If the unit is not heating or cooling effectively it could be due to clogged filters. These need to be cleaned every 6 months.
If it is extremely hot, the unit will not cool as well as usual so set the temperature at a higher level like 24 degrees to avoid damaging the unit.

Doors and Locks?
If your door locks are sticky, you can lubricate them with graphite. If you have recently had the key cut, it may not be quite the right fit.
If your hinges are sticky or squeaking, lubricate with an aerosol lubricant like WD40.

Oven Not Working?
If the oven works but is producing little heat, check the oven door to make sure it is sealing. If it is an electric oven, check your power supply. Check the timer function as some ovens require the timer be on to operate. Check the oven control knobs as some need to combine to function. Check the heating elements in the oven are working. Start by wiggling the element to see if it is just loose.

Smoke Detector Beeping?
Replace the battery if it is safe to do so.

Automatic Garage/Gate Not Opening?
Replace the batteries in the remote control.

Internet Not Working?
Contact your service provider.
